Meet the first African elected to the Federal Parliament in Australia

Kenyan-Australian based lawyer, Lucy Gichuhi has emerged as the first African descent elected to the Federal Parliament as a senator in Australia.
The Family First member who came second behind her fellow candidate, Bob Day, in a recent election was later declared the winner after the electoral commission found Day ineligible to hold office because he had an 'indirect pecuniary interest' in an agreement with the commonwealth.
According to a South Australian political source, Gichuhi’s election was confirmed at a special recount conducted by the Australian Electoral Commission on Thursday. She will be the first person of African descent elected to federal parliament.
Speaking after the confirmation in a statement. Ms. Gichuhi said:
I am honored and grateful for this opportunity to serve Australia. I see it as an opportunity to give back to this great nation,'
However,  Lucy Gichuhi migrated to Australia in 1999 and became an Australian in 2001
